Urban Observers Group 2011

We will no longer be holding Urban Observers at Indooroopilly State High School. Instead all Urban Observers meetings will be held at the Barrett St Reserve Bracken Ridge on the first and third Sunday of each month. Entry off Jude St.

If you are looking to buy a telescope and need advice on choosing the right one or if you have already purchased a telescope and want help to start observing the Urban Observers group is for you. This is a free public service provided by SEQAS open to anyone. You don't need a telescope to attend.

The Group meets at the Barrett St Reserve, Bracken Ridge (entry off Jude St) on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from dusk.

SEQAS provides observing through a number of members' telescopes as well as our new Celestron Nexstar 11 telescope and Stella Cam 2 video camera showing live images of deep sky objects on a LCD screen. We also provide simple star charts and observing tips for beginners. We cater for all levels of experience and all ages. We will soon have several dedicated Solar Telescopes on display thanks to a successful grant application from the Community Benefits Gambling Fund.

Urban Observers Guidelines

• A red torch is the number one essential piece of equipment for astronomy. This can be as simple as red cellophane covering your torch to more elaborate LED lights.
• Warn other astronomers if you need to use a bright light so that they can shield their eyes. (It takes 20 minutes or more for your eyes to become dark-adapted.)
• Use parking lights only on or near observing field.
• Arrive at the grounds well before nightfall to set up equipment.
• Only touch equipment with the permission of the owner.
• Make sure children are well supervised around telescopes and equipment.
• Bring adequate layers of warm clothing (even in summer), water proof and warm footwear, a hat, gloves or mittens, insect repellent, any books, starcharts, atlases for the working session.
• Don't be afraid to ask questions or to ask for help. We are there to help each other.
